Assimilation is the spread of a popular, most successful ethnicity in a country, in this case America. I personally admit I have ;assimilated before, and I'm very sure everyone has or will assimilate, even unintenionally. When caucasions have specific cultures or traits, others decide to inhabit those things. For example Beneatha perms and somewhat replenishes her hair according to the book, The Raisin In The Sun. She has done so, because she found her natural beauty is not what she defines as so, and prefers strait hair like the whites. Asagai points out what he thinks is a flaw, and finds that she shouldn't do that just to fit in. This play shows it as a weakness, for African Americans do not embrace their birth hair. There are numerous people in these surroundings of mine that seem to assimilate, label wise, style, and even personalities. Students find the more powerful popular students wearing something and mimic it for appraisal and/or attention. Even those who do not follow them, decide to follow the unfollowers. I think that assimilation is an assassination to a person's culture and personality really. Eric Lui's view is very incisive, proving his point is logical and agreeable. Tying in his childhood and life, with the explanation of his current state of cluelessness, just verifies his opinion is valid.
This passage gave me a clear understanding and the refrences were great. Do you feel as if you have or are assimilating?
ReplyDeleteSlightly just slightly am.
DeleteWhat is Liu's point? You're pretty vague there...
ReplyDeleteLiu states that assimilation is not always bad, but can be an upgrade to a lifestyle, although most of the cultural roots are somewhat forgotten.
